We welcome everyone and try to provide a friendly and inclusive environment to play chess. We have members with a wide range of skills so we can provide suitable matches for all, including those at an early skill level. We get together to enjoy our chess not just to win. New members are always welcome.
We play chess all year at the Chelston Chapel, Wellington and meet on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. The Chapel has toilet and tea and coffee facilities. Thanks go to the Chapel congregation for their support.
In the winter in addition to friendly matches and internal club competitions we play against other Somerset clubs in the Somerset County Chess Association competitions. During the summer we have more informal events like the highest graded member playing everyone else simulaneously, blitz play competitions and joint events with other clubs.
In normal times a there is a report of our activities each week in the Wellington Weekly News.
We have a varying number of junior members who have their own club competitions but also play against adult members and where appropriate, against other clubs. We try to help everyone develop their game. We need juniors to be accompanied by a parent or guardian for safeguarding puposes.
Our subscription fee is £5 p.a. to take a full part in competitions etc. but there is no charge for casual attendance.
We are members of the Somerset County Chess Association (SCCA) and operate under the rules of the English Chess Federation (ECF). Members who join the ECF (which has varying annual subscriptions) & participate in the formal competitions will get a skill rating from the ECF based on their performance against other rated players.
