Other details
All levels welcome. Coaching available. We usually run an annual charity tournament aimed more at casual players but all levels are welcome and the early round(s) are usually seeded. 10 juniors entered last time and we prefer them to be paired against each other in the first round to try and encourage participation. Local businesses donate prizes and the entry fee is kept low – £5.00. This has grown each year since starting in 2014 and last time around £1100.00 was donated to the Prostate Cancer charity. The local Mayor attends to present prizes.
The founder member is Keith Thompson. Keith was keen to promote the idea of playing chess outside cafés and bars, and sets were given to clubs that liked this idea. Each year, in a build up to the tournament, a group of players gather outside Bewdley Museum and people passing by often stop for a game, and flyers for local clubs, chess in schools and tips on how to improve are given out.
